This is an example of a once ugly flat-tiled fireplace enclosure that we transformed into a rustic mantle/hearth unit with stonework and wrought iron accents to make a truly warm and inviting meeting place. The wood was all rough fir with two coats of polyurethane finish.

And here is a kitchen island countertop that was built to complement the family room fireplace above using the same wood trim, and the same style tile and grout to match the fireplace hearth with wood accents and wrought iron corbels.
